Day 7: July 11, 2018
This morning we left our hotel in Assisi and drove a spectacular way to Orvieto. Orvieto is one of the most striking, memorable and enjoyable hill towns in central Italy. It sits majestically high above the valley on top of a “tufo” volcanic stone. Aso soon as we arrived we marvelled at the colorful, prickly, Gothic Duomo. We then walked the delightful, perfectly preserved and virtually traffic-free street and enjoyed a visit to the local ceramic shops. In the afternoon we drove to Rome and reached the city in the early afternoon.. Roma caput mundi. The center of the Roman Empire. The cradle of our civilization. The same city where Charlemagne had himself crowned 'Holy' Roman Emperor, signifying that the old Roman Empire was revived and reunited as a Christian Empire. When Europe was united in the Catholic Faith, pilgrims journeyed to the Vatican. In 1300, the first declared Holy Year 30,000 pilgrims reached Rome in a single day. By 1450 it had increased to 40,000. And now we add up to the list.We are in love with Rome. We have already learnt that all raods lead to Rome and we have become expert at ordering a gelato. Molto buono anzi buonissimo...
