Day 2 Tuesday June 8, 2021. From George & Martha, to keeping the Union together! This morning we went first thing to Arlington National Cemetery to see the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This incredible ceremony happens every hour 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365, rain or shine. You can’t believe how this site is related to George Washington,( we will tell you when we get home). For over 100 years we have been honoring the Unknown Soldiers! Along the way we saw the gravesites of many notable people, including President JFK. Next we got to take a boat cruise on the Potomac River and see the great buildings and memorials of DC from the River point of view. Wonderful. After a nice lunch break, we were off to Mt. Vernon, the home of George & Martha Washington. We got to tour the Mansion and see the Tomb and other sites. We even got to see George’s false teeth and you won’t believe what they are made of! After an amazing dinner in Old Town Alexandria, many of us went on a tour of the historic town, aka The Ghost Tour. Ask us about Pink Lemonade when we get home! The rest of us explored this historic town and maybe found some ice cream along the way. Did we mention we did all of this when it was 100 degrees and 90% humidity!? That did not slow us down. Oh and the East Coast is having an invasion of Cicadas, which only happens every 17 years. They are harmless to us, but they are everywhere! We are off to Philadelphia & New York City tomorrow. We can’t wait to see what adventures are in store for us there!
