Explore the narrow streets of the original settlement of Quebec lined with grand architecture and imposing cathedrals. Why was the Citadelle built? What is a bastion and what is it used for? The tour takes students through the Citadelle, telling the story of its construction as it relates to history and the garrison's place as a military site in Québec City. The various stops introduce the buildings, bastions and strongholds and their functions in fortification and the city against the American attacks.

Students experience the city’s highest points and lowest depths, and everything in between. At the highest point, Saint Joseph’s Oratory rises majestically on Mont Royal. The church’s dome is second only to St. Peter’s in Rome. On the other end of the spectrum, students witness the double-decker city of Montréal – an underground city comprised of a series of tunnels and galleries connecting shops and restaurants.

When he saw his church completed, the Protestant architect of the Notre Dame Basilica was so inspired that he converted to Catholicism. The blue-and-gold interior certainly is inspiring: practically every bit of the immense wooden church is covered in gold leaf. The imported stained-glass windows show the history of Montreal, further illustrated by the statues of famous residences outside. This famous Basilica helps demonstrate how the church played an important role in Canada’s history.

Visit the very site where Montréal was founded over 350 years ago, learn about Canada's archaelogical history and visit Pointe-a-Calliere where important archaeological remains and artifacts collected from archaeological digs at the site are displayed.

Details: Mont Royal and Beaver Lake visit
Overlooking the city of Montréal, Mont Royal boasts breathtaking views from the highest point in the city. Considered to be the oldest protected area in Québec, this large urban park was designed by celebrated landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. Inspired by “the poetic charms of natural scenery,” the park would be his only creation in Canada. Students can experience the public sculptures, paintings and installations, explore Smith House, the Chalet and the Beaver Lake Pavilion, and see a cross originally erected in 1643 to give thanks to God for saving the colony from a flood.

Throughout the city, your tour guide recounts Ottawa’s supernatural encounters and students learn why Ottawa was once considered the most dangerous town in North America. Afterwards, tour the Old Carleton County Jail, built in 1862, and learn about early prison life, as you see the jail cells, death row and the last working gallows in Canada. Students learn about classic tales of strange occurrences and ghostly visitations.
