Observed in China and worldwide, the Chinese New Year is the Lunar New Year, observed on the new moon between January 21 and February 20. Each year is also assigned an animal \u2014 February 5 marks the year of the pig. The pig is the last of the 12 animals in the zodiac cycle, due to its reputation as the slowest of the bunch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millions of people <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/av\/world-asia-china-35498848\/chinese-new-year-the-largest-annual-human-migration\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">travel home<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> each year to celebrate, usually with firecrackers (said to ward off the mythical beast Nian), gifts of money in red paper envelopes, red decorations, and traditional foods like dumplings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Questions to ask your students:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the difference between a solar and lunar new year? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelchinaguide.com\/intro\/social_customs\/zodiac\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zodiac sign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the year you were born.
