Take a walk through this incredible city to get a taste of the history and culture of Chile. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start off with Barrios Lastarria, the city\u2019s historic and artistic center. It also happens to be designated a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/959\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNESCO World Heritage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> site for its architectural and cultural importance, and is a can\u2019t-miss destination in Chile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a ride up and down the hills of the town on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.welcomechile.com\/valparaiso\/valparaiso-funiculars.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">funicular<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to marvel at the impressive and colorful street art, plus spectacular views of the harbor. Head on foot through two of the most famous and eclectic neighborhoods, Cerro Concepci\u00f3n and Cerro Alegre, and admire the quaint and colorful houses while looking out onto the gorgeous bay. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For literature lovers, Valpo offers the unique opportunity of seeing one of renowned Chilean poet Pablo Neruda&#8217;s homes. German-style architecture dominates the landscape, along with beautiful views of Lake Llanquihue and two snow-capped active volcanoes\u2014Osorno and Calbuco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve visited the town, we highly recommend taking a cruise through the crystalline waters of the lake, enjoying striking views of the Bay of Puerto Varas, the surrounding volcanoes, and the architecture of Puerto Varas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #f7941d;\">4 &#8211; Meet the Huilliche<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8137\" src=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Chile-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"837\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Chile-3.png 1080w, https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Chile-3-300x233.png 300w, https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Chile-3-768x595.png 768w, https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Chile-3-820x636.png 820w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you book with a group, you can take a hike to spend an afternoon learning about the history, music, medicine and cuisine of the Huilliche community of Quechalen Aitue. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a walk through the beautiful, temperate rainforest around Puerto Varas and see if you can spot a monito del monte\u2014a tiny marsupial, or the southern pudu\u2014the world\u2019s smallest deer, \u00a0among the lush green environment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, spend the afternoon with the Huilliche. The Huilliche\u2014whose name means \u201cSouthern people\u201d\u2014mostly speak Spanish, though a minority of the population speaks the Huilliche language. Chiloe is a known for its 18th- and 19th-century churches, made entirely of timber and designated a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/971\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2000. Take a walk around the island and view the palafitos, or colorful homes on stilts, and check out the fun craft market. Plus, if you love seafood, this fishing island might be the best place to order some in Chile. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re in for a real treat if you opt to take a wildlife cruise around the island, the only place in the world where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguins-world.com\/humboldt-penguin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humboldt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguins-world.com\/magellanic-penguin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magellanic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> penguins\u2014two related species both classified as threatened\u2014nest together.
