The opportunity to see new cities, cultures and countries is something that many students and teachers are taking advantage of across the United States. With favorable exchange rates and pent-up demand for international culture, it’s time to consider heading abroad.

One of the most affordable elements, not to mention one of the most delicious, is the opportunity to experience “street food” for lunch while you’re on tour. It might be a cart on Las Ramblas in Barcelona, or a hole in the wall deli in Florence. Take for example my last trip to Italy. While enjoying the sights and sounds of the streets and sidewalks, we jumped in line at a busy local sandwich shop for a true taste of Italy. We were not disappointed. A local crusty Panini stuffed with prosciutto, fresh mozzarella and tomato for just 4 euros! We shared it and were barely able to finish!

Most of these lunch items can be found for under 5 euro. In Florence, it was this delicious panini. In Madrid, it’s a cone of “hamon” (local for ham). In Amsterdam, a bag of hot French fries with mayonnaise. And in Paris, it’s a fresh-made banana and Nutella crepe!

So make sure to plan ahead on your next trip abroad. Check out the usual websites that point out the little shops where the local’s eat. I did, and I wasn’t disappointed. In fact, I never am. Lunch on a student tour is a great chance to get a delicious bite of what that city has to offer at a most affordable price!

Ready to start planning?
