Similar to the way Americans celebrate our own Independence Day, Parisians typically celebrate the birth of the French Republic with a massive Bastille Day Military Parade followed by a nighttime fireworks show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since we couldn\u2019t make it to Paris this year, we\u2019ve chosen to bring Paris to you\u2014in the form of this virtual tour through landmarks and locations important to the French Revolution. One thing they couldn\u2019t find was gunpowder, which was kept in the Bastille fortress. This event acted as a symbolic move against the monarchy\u2019s abuse of power and is considered a turning point in the French Revolution. The prison and its surrounding fortress have since been dismantled, and today Place de la Bastille is a commemorative square in the heart of Paris.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><b>Palace of Versailles<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/versailles.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10414 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/versailles.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/versailles.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/versailles-300x136.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/versailles-768x349.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/versailles-820x373.jpg 820w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ultimate palace, Versailles was built by Louis XIII and housed the royal family and its groveling court from 1682 until the French Revolution. King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, the French royalty at the time of the Revolution, lived here until they were removed from power and ultimately beheaded.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><b>Place de la Concorde<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/concorde.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10415 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/concorde-820x546.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"519\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/concorde-820x546.jpeg 820w, https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/concorde-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/concorde-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.explorica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/concorde.jpeg 1732w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1792, the statue of King Louis XV in the middle of Place de la Concorde was destroyed; shortly thereafter, the square was renamed Place de la Revolution.
