Day 2: June 30, 2009

Flight landed at Madrid Barajas on time where we met Andy (tour director) who transfered us across the city to our hotel. Still early in the day before the afternoon summer heat so we deposited luggage, freshen up and then set out immediately to begin our explorations of the Spanish capital (and beat our jet-lag) on foot. Strolled past the Royal Palace, along the pedestrianised Arenal, past San Gines chocolatería and through the elegant Plaza Mayor to the Puerta del Sol (Spain's geographical centre) where we ate lunch, exchanged money and enjoyed some shopping time along its busy streets. Then continued on to visit the tropical gardens inside Atocha rail station and stroll through one of the craft markets beside the shady Retiro Park. Rode the metro (subway) back to the hotel where we checked in for a well earned rest (and shower). Filling buffet dinner close to the Opera house before a long deep night's sleep in the hotel.
