Day 2: July 21, 2009

Hi everyone, We’ve arrived in Beijing China this afternoon, everything is perfect so far. This is a totally new country for us, we are so exciting to see it though feel a little bit tired and so sleepy after the long trip from the other side of the Pacific Ocean. Ok, first of all, a few words serve as the beginning of this trip in China. Beijing, the capital of the People’s Republic of China, is a modern metropolis of historical significance and the country’s political and cultural center. With its numerous scenic spots, the city attracts thousands of tourists from nearly everywhere around the world. According to historians and geologists, the cave-dwellers who are well-known as Peking man started to live in the present-day Beijing about 500,000 to 700,000 years ago, they were in fact the primordial inhabitants, who lived around Dragon Bone Hill by Zhoukoudian, a village about 50 kilometers southwest of Beijing. More than three thousand years ago, a city, or rather a citadel which was call “Ji”, appeared near the very site of present-day Beijing in 1045 BC. Ever since the 10th century, the city had been decided on as the capital of the Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties until 1911, then after many years of ceaseless civil wars and the wars against foreign imperialism, Beijing became the cradle of a new cultural campaign in China. On October 1, 1949, the people of Beijing hailed their liberation when Chairman Mai Zedong proclaimed to the whole world the founding of the People’s Republic of China. A new chapter of the city’s history has since opened up. Beijing is situated as a location 40 degrees north latitude and 116 degrees east longitude; it’s backed by mountainous areas to the north and west and overlooks the North China Plain to the south and east. The city covers an area of 16,800 square kilometers, 38 percent of which is flat land while the rest is mountainous area. The population of Being is about 15 million, it’s composition consists of 56 ethnic groups with the Han retaining about 96% of the whole and Muslims, Manchus, and Mongolians being next in sequence. From the Beijing International Airport we directly hit the road to the Olympic Village where we spent about 40 minutes for the photos. It's quite hot here with a temperature of about 35 degrees centigrade. Dinner is at a typical Chinese restaurant, we feel not bad though this is the first time for us to eat here, and hopefully, we'll be used to it soon in the coming days. We checked in driving to hotel, got room keys and took shower. After that, some play cards in the lobby, others use internet service in rooms. We'll have a full day's sightseeing tomorrow. Talk to you soon Best regards from Beijing China
