Featured Destination: The Yucatan

When people think of the Yucatan Peninsula, they often think of the white powdery sands and pale turquoise waters of Cancun and Cozumel beaches—and with good reason. The shorelines of these resort towns are stunning, and the surrounding waters boast rich biodiversity. But the beauty of Mexico’s Eastern most tip is not limited to the coasts alone.

In fact, the Yucatan Peninsula is also home to some of Mexico’s oldest surviving Mayan sites, including the crumbling temples and pyramids of Uxmal, Chichén Itzá, Cenote X-Keken and X-Caret. Such ancient hotspots give visitors compelling insight into one of the world’s most powerful civilizations.

Then, of course, there’s the region’s prominent Spanish influence. The colorful colonial Old Towns of Yucatan cities are a perfect compliment to the pastel beaches, and offer lessons in the region’s more recent history. Plus, in the charming open air markets visitors can find handmade crafts and authentic local delicacies. And for Spanish students, even browsing in shops is a great opportunity to practice their language skills.

This year Explorica offers a number of Yucatan itineraries, including Mexico City and the Yucatan, The Yucatan and Mayan Riviera, and Yucatan Highlights. Each offers a different take on the region’s many attractions. For more information on planning a tour to Mexico, contact your Program Consultant at 1.888.310.7120.
